Important Local Regulations

In Curaçao:

  • Lionfish removal is permitted in an organized context using the ELF tool or pole spear.
  • Mechanical trigger spears are prohibited.
  • Divers must comply with all local safety and removal guidelines.

In Bonaire:

  • Only the ELF tool is allowed for lionfish removal.
  • Divers must register with STINAPA and obtain a permit to participate in lionfish control activities.
  • Gloves are not allowed to protect the coral reef from damage.

Course Details

What You’ll Learn:
Lionfish Biology & Environmental Impact: Understand the damage caused by lionfish and the role you can play in mitigating it.
Local Regulations: Learn the rules and regulations that govern lionfish removal in Curaçao and Bonaire.
Lionfish Removal Techniques: Get hands-on experience using approved tools such as the ELF tool or pole spear.
Two Open Water Dives: Put your new skills to practice during two supervised open water dives, removing lionfish from local reefs.

Course Requirements

  • Minimum Age: 15 years old
  • Certification Required: PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
  • Special Equipment: ELF tool (Bonaire) or pole spear/ELF tool (Curaçao)
  • Permit for Bonaire: STINAPA permit required for lionfish removal in Bonaire (gloves prohibited).
